We have all been captivated by the BBC adaptation of Tolstoy’s War and Peace which has brightened up our Sunday evenings with the fabulous costumes, scenery and romance. We have followed the lives of Pierre, Natasha and Andrei, against the backdrop of war with Napoleon.
Russian artists are very popular at the moment and Russian art is, as always, very collectible.
This is a lovely painting of a Russian girl in a gossamer gold cap, sat in a wonderful draped bed. You feel that you could easily weave a story around the scene. The painting has a wonderful soft focus of blues, pinks and golds which make it very atmospheric.

This wonderfully vibrant painting of Russian/Slovakian peasant women in traditional costume, walking to church with their bibles, is very striking. The red headdress with floral skirt and the fur trims on the older woman’s coat, are very evocative of the time. It was painted in 1916 and is a very interesting and detailed painting.
